The first lady subjected herself to severe criticism from the public by making a surprise appearance in the Oscars by satellite from the Washington D.C. Governors Ball, making herself the virtual announcer for the award for Best Picture.
It’s no shock that Barack and Michelle Obama both seem to view themselves more as celebrities than political leaders of an entire nation, but many were offended by Mrs. Obama’s crashing of the party at the Oscars. In the previous week, she released two public service announcements with Big Bird and was featured on Rachel Ray. She also attempted to bust a move on Jimmy Falon by performing a ridiculous dance skit to promote her anti-obesity campaign, with it’s “Let’s Move” motto.
It’s theorized that Michelle Obama’s recent spike in appearances is an attempt to rally support for her husband’s agendas by charming the public with all of these antics, however it’s obvious she has gone too far by the public reaction to her appearance at the Oscars, in which it has been reported that audible groaning was heard from spectators that were present.
Advertising executive Donny Deutsch called her an “uninvited guest”, and proclaimed that she was “putting politics, like it or not, into a space that people are not necessarily invited into their home for.”
However, according to Mrs. Obama’s spokeswoman Kristina Schake and producer for the Oscars Neil Meron, Michelle Obama’s appearance was not only welcome, but preplanned.
“The Academy Awards approached the first lady about being a part of the ceremony. As a movie lover, she was honored to present the award and celebrate the artists who inspire us all, especially our young people, with their passion, skill, and imagination,” Schake said. Meron included that her appearance had been part of the plan from the beginning.
Regardless of whether she was invited or not, most were unhappy with her appearance, as it seemed to trivialize her role as first lady. That’s never stopped the Obamas before, however. Frequently, both present themselves in more of a celebrity role than in any other, surrounding themselves with the likes of Beyonce and throwing massive parties with high celebrity attendance at the White House.
Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin said that “now the first lady feels entitled, with military personel as props, to intrude on other forms of entertaining, this time for the benefit of the Hollywood glitterati who so lavishly paid for her husband’s election.”
It seems there is no end to the Obama family performances, as no matter what arena they appear in, it all ends up becoming a circus of some kind. Fortunately with this most recent debacle, the public is finally voicing it’s tiredness with the constant appearances of the political clowns.
